UMRio/ONERio covid-19 policy

ONERio has been working closely with UMRio in seeking to keep our young people safe, while also providing a service to their local communities in Morro do Castro.

Rio de Janeiro has limited supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) available to purchase, little of which reaches favela communities. Consequently, Director Robert Malengreau decided to call UMRio’s young people to action in implementing a care package scheme. Our participants have been delivering parcels of food and sanitary supplies to homes across Morro do Castro safely and enthusiastically, while our staff in Rio de Janeiro are contacting as many .PPE suppliers as possible to obtain the necessary equipment.

Robert said ‘we know that if we do not take these measures, families will go hungry and will have to head to Niterói or São Gonçalo city centres to purchase food, which will put them at a higher risk of exposure to covid-19. This, in turn, will raise the risk of bringing the virus back to Morro do Castro’.
